Beginning on December 1, 2017, all competition horses participating in Hunter/Jumper classes sanctioned by the USHJA will be required to have 1) identification papers (i.e. a registration or Certificate of Pedigree or other document showing the horse’s age, description, etc., and 2) be microchipped in order to earn points and claim winning. By December 1, 2018, no horse will be able to compete without a microchip. SWANA is offering our members the opportunity to obtain a microchip for their foal (or already registered horse) at a significant savings.
How Does It Work?
The EquineChip™ microchip we are offering to members are offered from Microchip ID Equine, utilized by many breed associations in North America. It is a company with 20 years of experience in microchipping horses, The chip is recognized by the International Standard Organization (ISO) and is FEI compliant. Each EquineChip™ has a unique identification number programmed into it, and is small enough to fit into a hypodermic needle. The chip is quickly and easily injected into the nuchal ligament, where it is guaranteed for the life of the animal. This unique equine number cannot be altered or removed.
Who Maintains the Chip’s Data?
Once the microchip has been injected, it should be registered in the Equine Protection Registry (EPR), where information is safely stored in cases of loss, theft or natural disaster. This is included in your special offer. You must have the accurate chip number that is in your horse, before you can enroll online. It is wise to report the microchip number to SWANA as well, we will add it to your horse’s permanent record. For foals born 2018 that are microchipped, the number will be added to the passport.
