Books and Registers
All horses are evaluated on a case-by-case basis following these guidelines:
Book I
- Sire is a licensed SWB or is approved to breed to SWB mares
- Dam is SWB with Book I or Book II papers, or an approved warmblood or thoroughbred mare
- Both sire and dam have at least 3 known generations
Book II
- Sire is a licensed SWB or is approved to breed to SWB mares
- Dam’s maternal grandsire or maternal great-grandsire is an SWB (or approved breed) that is not approved for breeding
- Upgrade possibilities: With a fully approved sire, the offspring of this horse may be eligible to receive Book I papers.
Book III
- Book III is given in rare circumstances. One of the parents is a SWB in Book IV or in Register A, B, or C who has excelled in sport. If this parent is the dam, she must also be in Studbook B.
- The other parent is fully approved.
- Upgrade possibilities: With a fully approved sire, the offspring of this horse may be eligible to receive Book I papers.
Book IV
- Sire has been evaluated by the stallion committee, but was not approved at the time of breeding and is Book I SWB (or equivalent in an approved breed).
- Dam is a Book I SWB (or equivalent in an approved breed).
- Upgrade possibilities: With a fully approved sire, the offspring of this horse may be eligible to receive Book II papers.
Register A
- Sire is a Book I SWB (or equivalent in an approved breed) but had not been evaluated by the stallion committee at the time of breeding
- Dam is a Book I SWB (or equivalent in an approved breed).
- Upgrade possibilities: With a fully approved sire, the offspring of this horse may be eligible to receive Book II papers.
Register B
- Sire is a licensed SWB or is approved to breed to SWB mares
- Dam’s pedigree is not acceptable due to unknowns or unacceptable breed
- Upgrade possibilities: Offspring may be eligible to receive Book I or Book II, depending on its pedigree.
Register C
- Sire’s pedigree is not acceptable due to unknowns or unacceptable breed
- Dam’s pedigree may or may not be acceptable
- Upgrade possibilities: With a fully approved sire, offspring may be eligible to receive Register B papers.
